In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find particularly if you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of the audi q3 key's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. If this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is the same across the replacement audi car key 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
